Crown thinning involved the removal of a proportion of small branches right through the crown. A maximum reduction of 30% is normally recommended. Thinning often produces short lived results particularly in the case of young vigorous species which may produce masses of dense re growth in subsequent years. This work may be carried out to:
a. Allow more light to pass through the crown.
b. Reduce wind resistance and increase stability.
c. To reduce water demand after root damage has occurred.
