Pollarding is the removal of all branches back to the trunk. In some circumstances this has been a traditional form of management, and my be continued. Trees which have already been pollarded should be inspected thoroughly and expert advise taken on the safety of the tree. Pollarding should not be used on trees that have previously been treated in this way, as the large wounds often allow decay to develop. New branches often become weak and are liable to break after a few years.
